THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition
Bamidbar
On the first day of the second month, in the second year after the exodus from the land of Egypt, GOD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, saying: Take a census of the whole Israelite community by the clans of its ancestral houses, listing the names, every male, head by head. You and Aaron shall record them by their groups, from the age of twenty years up, all those in Israel who are able to bear arms. Associated with you shall be a representative from every tribe, each one the head of his ancestral house. These are the names of the men who shall assist you:From Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur. From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. From Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab. From Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar. From Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. From the sons of Joseph:from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud;from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni. From Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. From Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran. From Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel. From Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan. Those are the elected of the assembly, the chieftains of their ancestral tribes: they are the heads of the contingents of Israel. So Moses and Aaron took those men who were designated by name, and on the first day of the second month they convoked the whole community, who were registered by the clans of their ancestral houses—the names of those aged twenty years and over being listed head by head. As GOD had commanded Moses, so he recorded them in the wilderness of Sinai. They totaled as follows:The descendants of Reuben, Israel’s first-born, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, head by head, all males aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Reuben: 46,500. Of the descendants of Simeon, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, their enrollment as listed by name, head by head, all males aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Simeon: 59,300. Of the descendants of Gad, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Gad: 45,650. Of the descendants of Judah, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Judah: 74,600. Of the descendants of Issachar, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Issachar: 54,400. Of the descendants of Zebulun, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Zebulun: 57,400. Of the descendants of Joseph:Of the descendants of Ephraim, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Ephraim: 40,500. Of the descendants of Manasseh, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Manasseh: 32,200. Of the descendants of Benjamin, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Benjamin: 35,400. Of the descendants of Dan, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Dan: 62,700. Of the descendants of Asher, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Asher: 41,500. [Of] the descendants of Naphtali, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Naphtali: 53,400. Those are the enrollments recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the chieftains of Israel, who were twelve in number, one from each ancestral house. All the Israelites aged twenty years and over, enrolled by ancestral houses, all those in Israel who were able to bear arms— all who were enrolled came to 603,550. The Levites, however, were not recorded among them by their ancestral tribe. For GOD had spoken to Moses, saying: Do not on any account enroll the tribe of Levi or take a census of them with the Israelites. You shall put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Pact, all its furnishings, and everything that pertains to it: they shall carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall tend it; and they shall camp around the Tabernacle. When the Tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the Tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; any outsider who encroaches shall be put to death. The Israelites shall encamp troop by troop, each [household] with its division and each under its standard. The Levites, however, shall camp around the Tabernacle of the Pact, that wrath may not strike the Israelite community; the Levites shall stand guard around the Tabernacle of the Pact. The Israelites did accordingly; just as GOD had commanded Moses, so they did.
Commentary
Rodef Shalom Commentary- (2024) Zev ben David, ואוש
In this week’s Parashah we begin the fourth book of the Torah, B’midbar, translated in English as “in the wilderness”, but as we sat listening to the repetitive census of the tribes, it is painfully obvious why the Greek and later English chose to simply call this book of the Torah simply ‘Arithmoi’,‘Numbers’. Numbers have always fascinated me for their ability to be something, everything, and nothing all at once. It is said that all politics is sociology, all sociology is philosophy, all psychology is neuroscience, all neuroscience is biology, all biology is chemistry, all chemistry is physics, and all physics is math. The whole of human knowledge boils down to numbers. And yet, in the fifth grade, my mother, a math teacher, had to console me one evening as I struggled with the concept that the words used for numbers and indeed the structure of mathematics itself was nothing more than a social construction, shattering my ideas of one fundamental thing underpinning the universe. This has been in my mind as I’ve recently been working with our three year old on the concepts of addition and subtraction through counting coins, the idea that this one coin, a nickel, is 5, while this other one coin is 10, and another 25. Objects and numbers have no intrinsic value or meaning but only what we put into them. So as our ancestors recorded their numbers as they entered the wilderness, we can safely assume that there was meaning for them, and enough value that generation after generation decided they were important enough to preserve while leaving out other important events in our history.
From the way they counted and arranged their numbers, of fighting and serving-age men, and only men, they clearly expected battle and feared the loss of their tendril of connection to the G-d who had just led them to freedom. Entering the wilderness with dangers unknown, the men of each tribe were assigned a place, a position, ensuring they had a duty to focus on so that when things get tough and communication breaks down, they still know what to do. They took care to tally and total these men twice and, but they did not once record the aged who carried the wisdom of the tribes, the young who were their future, nor the women whom they relied on for support. If the men were each, surely someone needed to be there to ensure everyone was fed, clothed, sheltered, taught, cultured, and loved. For what is the point of defending the community if the things that make the community worth protecting are ignored? And yet none of these important communities is counted, their numbers unknown.
Like many if not most of y’all, in both secular and religious education, I heard little about women and their contributions to world events, business, science, and innovation. Instead I heard that G-d clearly wanted women to be subservient, and we had the data, through countable stories and statistics that G-d did not deign women worthy to be counted except as supportive wives, malicious disruptors, and occasionally martyrs. Yet this did not jive with the data I’d collected from life experience. I grew up in a family where the men were most commonly absent or at best unreliable, due to death, disease or decision. The women were not the supporters, they were instead not only the leaders but the only reliable thing. My teachers in school were women. The nurses and doctors who treated me, were women. My older siblings and cousins who helped ensure we were clothed, fed, and safe, were women. But on Sunday, the scriptures we read were about men and were elaborated on by a male priest who told us what G-d’s plan was for each of us.
So reading this week’s parshah and its exclusion of the most important people in my world, my first response to this was one of anger. Frustration with the scribes who described these events and their myopic view of what was important. Frustration with G-d for giving the men of that generation a place, meaning, and purpose, while ignoring many marginalized groups and every generation since. But luckily, the women in my life had taught me one more skill that helps explain why this situation has persisted for so many centuries: the lens of compassion.
With that lens, we can see that the men focused on the warriors because they were scared of the future. They focus on the positions of the troops and the details of the mishkan, because they lacked control of anything else in their world. They were not being led into the wilderness by a compassionate mother who would anticipate their needs and reduce obstacles in their path so they could learn to grow into independence as they emerged from their collective childhood of rule-following slavery into the maturity of discussion, compromise, and creative problem solving. They were dealing with a force that could be heard as thunder from the skies and manifested as a pillar of fire which would strike out with death and disease at followers who failed to please it, whether offering it the wrong kind of offering, questioning the motivations and ability of the self-appointed leaders, or simply complaining about the quality and quantity of essential food and water. Earlier in [insert parsha] Moshe glimpses G-d and cries out that G-d is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and faithfulness, extending kindness to the thousandth generation, bearing iniquity, transgression and sin and acquitting; he appears to be engaging in wishful thinking or begging for this to be true. These men were terrified and their numbers reveal this.
I know the power of fear in my own life and home. As a type 1 diabetic, I get a constant stream of numbers that tell me what my blood sugar is in case I need to act. When they rise I give myself insulin and when they drop too quickly I intervene with glucose. While a high blood sugar can trim years off your life, it’s rarely fatal, but a low blood sugar can kill you in minutes. So when that number starts dropping, not only does my mind panic, but so does my body. Desperate for sugar, I can be the worse version of myself to the ones I love, and panicked over fear of death, I can overeat sweets, driving my blood sugar high and taking a slice off the end of my lifespan. My wife, bless her, has learned to ride these waves with compassion of her own, and we employ this same power when dealing with our daughters. When they cry because they don’t get to do something they want to, it’s because they’re afraid they won’t get another chance. With so many novel experiences in life they don’t understand that the slide at the playground will be there tomorrow, Blues Clues will be available on YouTube in the morning, or that there will be more opportunities to eat Cheetos. Compassion does not mean that we indulge them, but that as we firmly separate them from these activities, we comfort them with love, reassure them that there will be a chance to engage in these activities again, and help them focus on the good things they have, like their family and the good times ahead, like bath time and books before bed. With children, many of us have an intuitive understanding that responding with anger will only cause them more pain while teaching them that we will augment their fear with new anxiety when it arrives.
With adults, this compassion can be harder to muster, whether for people close to us, strangers in our community, or our people in the past. As my wife and I celebrate and commemorate our 10th anniversary tomorrow with our vow renewal, I must acknowledge that we did not always grant each other the compassion we deserved. When I moved to England while she embarked on her medical training in California, I was angry that she had selected a school close to her home, but far from ideal for my career as a scientist. I did not offer her compassion as she anticipated the fear of being separated from me while entering the financially and mentally abusive relationship that is medical school. When I told her of my disinterest in having children, she did not offer me the compassion of fearing that I would become like the men of my family, selfishly prioritizing their desires and needs over those of their family. Neither of us offered the other the compassion of the fears of aligning our mental wellbeing with the realities of living in a country where, for individuals not born to wealth and those with chronic illness, contributing to society has to take a back seat to the realities of loan payments and insurance. And yet, 10 years on we have moved together to Denver where Jessica and I have found a loving, caring communities of support, from baby bouncers and children’s clothes to meal trains and support for celebrating our simchot. We have two kind, beautiful children who bring joy to our hearts and every day give us new reasons to be proud to be their parents. Jessica helps patients with complex immunodeficiencies navigate our convoluted healthcare system to find treatment regardless of income or circumstances, and I lead a non-profit to help train the next generation of biomedical research leaders. We have worked hard to achieve these ends, but I suspect that the fear was needed at that time in our lives to motivate us.
In the Pixar film Inside Out (highly recommended for any who haven’t seen it), the characters presented are the primary emotions that motivate in youth: Disgust who keeps us from socially unacceptable behavior. Joy who gives us positive feelings and Sadness who helps us tell others we need help. Anger who tells us when things are unjust, and Fear who helps keep us safe. While age and experience can help us find the right balance of these, each serves a purpose. We should be Angry at the Torah for excluding everyone but fighting men, and Sadness that we’ll never know about the uncounted women who supported them. We should feel Disgust at those who perpetuate the marginalization of others, but we should also feel Joy at the progress we’ve made as a society and in our own lives to call out and reshape this worldview. But, with the lens of compassion, we should acknowledge that they may have needed their Fear to stay safe in the wilderness.
As a both Jews and Americans, we have made it through so many different versions of the wilderness. In my lifetime, we made it through the wilderness of the first Cold War and entered the wilderness of continuous war after 9/11. We made it through two intifadas and two rejected peace deals. We made it through the recessions of 2001 and 2008 and the first stage of the pandemic. We have now entered the post COVID medical and economic world, and the first phase of the second non-peaceful transfer of power in America and we are angry at the injustice and we in fear of the future. Most recently, the October 7th attacks by Hamas have fostered the revival of open antisemitism from others and within our own communities. We are responding logically, with disgust at our fellow citizens and fear of losing the two places in the world, carved out through two centuries of effort, where pograms are not the norm and Jews can serve at the highest levels in government. As we watch discord spread, sadness and anger are reasonable responses as well. And yet wee do not celebrate Simkhat Torah with fear with anger with hate. As a wise Muppet whose name literally means to know once in toned, these lead to suffer. Have no choice but to respond with joy.
So these are the numbers I hold dear. My wife and I have been together for 14 years, 11 years of which have been spent in PhD or medical training. We have been married for 10 years, relocated 4 times, and we have 2 wonderful daughters and 2 happy dogs in one one home. We are blessed with 18 visitors who have traveled from across the country to be here this weekend with us. This community has over 200 families with over 100 children who are being guided by loving teachers, parents, and friends to embrace a modern, inclusive, thoughtful form of Judaism that will help us weather life’s storms and make it through this wilderness. While G-d has not proclaimed from on high where we should stand, or how we should pack our things for the road ahead, through our continued struggle with G-d, the literal people of Israel, we know that we can ensure that all are counted and that all are worthy of duty. As we each march B’midbar, we can be ready to take up our responsibilities with the mantra given to us by the Gaon, Stephen Sondheim, z”l:
“Into the woods,
It’s time to go,
I hate to leave,
I have to, though.Into the woods-
It’s time, and so
I must begin my journey”

Bamidbar
On the first day of the second month, in the second year following the exodus from the land of Egypt, יהוה spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, saying: Take a census of the whole Israelite company [of fighters] by the clans of its ancestral houses, listing the names, every male, head by head. You and Aaron shall record them by their groups, from the age of twenty years up, all those in Israel who are able to bear arms. Associated with you shall be a participant from each tribe, each one the head of his ancestral house. These are the names of the participants who shall assist you: From Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur. From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. From Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab. From Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar. From Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. From the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. So Moses and Aaron took those participants, who were designated by name, and on the first day of the second month they convoked the whole company [of fighters], who were registered by the clans of their ancestral houses—the names of those aged twenty years and over being listed head by head. As יהוה had commanded Moses, so he recorded them in the wilderness of Sinai. They totaled as follows: The descendants of Reuben, Israel’s first-born, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, head by head, all males aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Reuben: 46,500. Of the descendants of Joseph: Of the descendants of Ephraim, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Ephraim: 40,500. Those are the enrollments recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the chieftains of Israel, who were twelve in number, one participant from each ancestral house. All the Israelite males, aged twenty years and over, enrolled by ancestral houses, all those in Israel who were able to bear arms— all who were enrolled came to 603,550. The Levites, however, were not recorded among them by their ancestral tribe. For יהוה had spoken to Moses, saying: Do not on any account enroll the tribe of Levi or take a census of them with the Israelites. The Israelites shall encamp troop by troop, each man with his division and each under his standard. The Levites, however, shall camp around the Tabernacle of the Pact, that wrath may not strike the Israelite community; the Levites shall stand guard around the Tabernacle of the Pact. The Israelites did accordingly; just as יהוה had commanded Moses, so they did.

AND the Lord spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinay, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Miżrayim, saying, Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el, after their families, by the houses of their fathers, by the number of names, every male by their polls; from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Yisra᾽el: thou and Aharon shall number them by their hosts. And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers. And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Re᾽uven; Eliżur the son of Shede᾽ur. Of Shim῾on; Shelumi᾽el the son of Żurishadday. Of Yehuda; Naĥshon the son of ῾Amminadav. Of Yissakhar; Netan᾽el the son of Żu῾ar. Of Zevulun; Eli᾽av the son of Ḥelon. Of the children of Yosef: of Efrayim; Elishama the son of ῾Ammihud: of Menashshe, Gamli᾽el the son of Pedażur. Of Binyamin; Avidan the son of Gid῾oni. Of Dan; Aĥi῾ezer the son of ῾Ammishadday. Of Asher; Pag῾i᾽el the son of ῾Okhran. Of Gad; Elyasaf the son of De῾u᾽el, Of Naftali, Aĥira the son of ῾Enan. These were the men of mark in the congregation, princes of the tribes of their fathers, heads of thousands in Yisra᾽el. And Moshe and Aharon took these men who were pointed out by their names: and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the houses of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. As the Lord commanded Moshe, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinay. And the children of Re᾽uven, Yisra᾽el’s oldest son, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Re᾽uven, were forty six thousand, five hundred. Of the children of Shim῾on, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Shim῾on, were fifty nine thousand, three hundred. Of the children of Gad, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty five thousand, six hundred and fifty. Of the children of Yehuda, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Yehuda, were seventy four thousand, six hundred. Of the children of Yissakhar, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Yissakhar, were fifty four thousand, four hundred. Of the children of Zevulun, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zevulun, were fifty seven thousand, four hundred. Of the children of Yosef, of the children of Efrayim, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Efrayim, were forty thousand, five hundred. Of the children of Menashshe, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Menashshe, were thirty two thousand, two hundred. Of the children of Binyamin, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Binyamin, were thirty five thousand, four hundred. Of the children of Dan, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty two thousand, seven hundred. Of the children of Asher, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty one thousand, five hundred. Of the children of Naftali, their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naftali, were fifty three thousand, four hundred. These are those that were numbered, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered, and the princes of Yisra᾽el, being twelve men: each one represented the house of his fathers. So were all those that were numbered of the children of Yisra᾽el, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Yisra᾽el; all they that were numbered were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty. But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. For the Lord had spoken to Moshe, saying, Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, nor take the sum of them among the children of Yisra᾽el: but thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all its vessels, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all its vessels; and they shall minister to it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. And when the tabernacle sets forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that comes near shall be put to death. And the children of Yisra᾽el shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony. And the children of Yisra᾽el did according to all that the Lord commanded Moshe, so they did.

Bamidbar
YHWH spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Appointment, on the first [day] of the second month, in the second year after their going-out from the land of Egypt, saying: Take up the head-count of the entire community of the Children of Israel, by their clans, by their Fathers’ Houses, according to the number of names, every male per capita; from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces in Israel: you are to count them [for battle] according to their forces, you and Aharon. And with you let there be a man, a man per tribe [each], each head of his Fathers’ House he is [to be]. Now these are the names of the men who are to stand with you: for Re’uven: Elitzur son of Shedei’ur; for Shim’on: Shelumi’el son of Tzurishaddai; for Yehuda: Nahshon son of Amminadav; for Yissakhar: Netan’el son of Tzu’ar; for Zevulun: Eliav son of Heilon; for the Sons of Yosef: for Efrayim: Elishama son of Ammihud; for Menashe: Gamliel son of Pedahtzur; for Binyamin: Avidan son of Gid’oni; for Dan: Ahi’ezer son of Ammishaddai; for Asher: Pag’iel son of Okhran; for Gad: Elyasaf son of De’uel; for Naftali: Ahira’ son of Einan. These are the [ones] called-by the community, the exalted-leaders of the tribes of their fathers; heads of the divisions of Israel are they. Now Moshe and Aharon took these men, who were indicated by name, and the entire community they assembled, on the first [day] of the second month; they declared-their-lineage according to their clans, by their Fathers’ Houses, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, per capita, as YHWH had commanded Moshe; thus he counted them [for battle] in the Wilderness of Sinai. Thus they were: the Sons of Re’uven, firstborn of Israel, their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, per capita, every male from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Re’uven: six and forty thousand and five hundred. For the Sons of Shim’on: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, those of his count, as numbered by name, per capita, every male from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Shim’on: nine and fifty thousand and three hundred. For the Sons of Gad: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Gad: five and forty thousand and six hundred and fifty. For the Sons of Yehuda: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Yehuda: four and seventy thousand and six hundred. For the Sons of Yissakhar: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Yissakhar: four and fifty thousand and four hundred. For the Sons of Zevulun: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Zevulun: seven and fifty thousand and four hundred. For the Sons of Yosef: For the Sons of Efrayim: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Efrayim: forty thousand and five hundred. For the Sons of Menashe: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Menashe: two and thirty thousand and two hundred. For the Sons of Binyamin: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Binyamin: five and thirty thousand and four hundred. For the Sons of Dan: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Dan: two and sixty thousand and seven hundred. For the Sons of Asher: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Asher: one and forty thousand and five hundred. For the Sons of Naftali: their begettings by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, as numbered by name, from the age of twenty years and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces: their count, of the tribe of Naftali: three and fifty thousand and four hundred. These are the accountings which Moshe and Aharon and the leaders of Israel counted, [the] twelve men—one man per Fathers’ House were they— they were, all those accounted for of the Children of Israel by their Fathers’ House, from the age of twenty and upward, everyone going out to the armed-forces in Israel, thus they were, all those accounted for: 603550. But the Levites, by the tribe of their fathers, were not counted in the midst of them. YHWH spoke to Moshe, saying: Mark, the tribe of Levi you are not to count, their head-count you are not to take up in the midst of the Children of Israel. But you, make the Levites accountable for the Dwelling of Testimony, for all its implements and for all that belongs to it: they are to carry the Dwelling and all its implements, they are to attend to it, and around the Dwelling they are to camp. When the Dwelling moves on, the Levites are to take it down, and when the Dwelling is encamped, the Levites are to set it up; the outsider who comes near is to be put-to-death! The Children of Israel are to camp, each according to his encampment, each according to his banner-contingent, by their forces. But the Levites are to camp around the Dwelling of Testimony—that there be no fury against the community of the Children of Israel— and the Levites are to keep the charge of the Dwelling of Testimony. The Children of Israel did [it]; exactly as YHWH commanded Moshe, thus they did.
YHWH spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying: Take up the head-count of the Sons of Kehat from the midst of the Sons of Levi, by their clans, by their Fathers’ House, from the age of thirty years and upward, until the age of fifty years, all who enter the working-force to do skilled-work in the Tent of Appointment. This is the serving-task of the Sons of Kehat in the Tent of Appointment: the holiest holy-things. Aharon and his sons are to come, when the camp marches forward, and are to take down the curtain of the screen, and are to cover with it the Coffer of the Testimony. They are to put over it a covering of tanned-leather skin, and are to spread a cloth entirely of blue-violet on top, putting its poles [in place]. On the Table of the Presence they are to spread a cloth of blue-violet, and are to place on it the bowls, the ladles, the jars and the jugs for pouring [offerings], and the regular bread is to remain on it. They are to spread over these a cloth of worm-scarlet, and are to cover it with a covering of tanned-leather skin, and put its poles [in place]. They are to take a cloth of blue-violet and are to cover the lampstand for the lighting, its lamps, its tongs and its fire-pans, and all the implements for its oil which they use in conjunction with them. They are to place it and all its implements in a covering of tanned-leather skin, and place [them] on a frame. Over the altar of gold they are to spread a cloth of blue-violet, and are to cover it with a covering of tanned-leather skin, putting its poles [in place]. They are to take all the implements of attending with which they tend in the Holy-Shrine and are to put them into a cloth of blue-violet, and are to cover them with a covering of tanned-leather skin, placing [them] on a frame. They are to de-ash the altar, and are to spread on it a cloth of purple; they are to place on it all its implements that they use in conjunction with them: the fire-pans, the flesh-hooks, the scrapers and the bowls, all the implements of the altar, and they are to spread over it a covering of tanned-leather skin, and put its poles [in place]. [Once] Aharon and his sons have finished covering the holy-things and all the holy implements, when the camp marches on, [only] after that may the Sons of Kehat enter, to carry, so that they do not touch the holy-things and die. These are the carrying-chores of the Sons of Kehat in the Tent of Appointment. Accountable is El’azar son of Aharon the priest for: the oil for the light, the fragrant smoking-incense, the regular grain-gift, and the oil for anointing— accountable for all the Dwelling and all that is in it, whether the holy-things or its implements. YHWH spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying: Do not cut off the tribe of the clans of Kehat from the midst of the Levites; do this with them, that they may live and not die when they encroach upon the holiest holy-things: Aharon and his sons are to enter and assign them, each one, each one to his service, his carrying-chores. But they are not to enter and see [even] for-a-moment [the dismantling of] the Holy-Shrine, lest they die.

[Of] the descendants of Naphtali, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms— those enrolled from the tribe of Naphtali: 53,400. Those are the enrollments recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the chieftains of Israel, who were twelve in number, one man to each ancestral house. All the Israelites, aged twenty years and over, enrolled by ancestral houses, all those in Israel who were able to bear arms— all who were enrolled came to 603,550. The Levites, however, were not recorded among them by their ancestral tribe. For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying: Do not on any account enroll the tribe of Levi or take a census of them with the Israelites. The Israelites shall encamp troop by troop, each man with his division and each under his standard. The Levites, however, shall camp around the Tabernacle of the Pact, that wrath may not strike the Israelite community; the Levites shall stand guard around the Tabernacle of the Pact. The Israelites did accordingly; just as the LORD had commanded Moses, so they did.

These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men; they were each one for his fathers’house. And all those that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; even all those that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: ’Howbeit the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel; but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it; they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; and the common man that draweth nigh shall be put to death. And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man with his own camp, and every man with his own standard, according to their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.’ Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

When the Divine House is to be moved, the Levites shall take it apart; and when the Divine House is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up, but the non-Levite who shall approach to do the service of the Levites will be punished by death from Heaven. But the Levites shall be stationed all around the Divine House where the Tablets of Testimony are placed, so that there be no Divine displeasure against the Community of the Children of Israel; the Levites alone shall perform the duties for the Divine House of the Testimony. From twenty years and up, all who go to war in Israel, [twenty being the minimum age], number them by their hosts, you and Aaron. And with you shall be [when you count them] one man of every tribe, each the chief of his fathers’ house. And these are the names of the men who will stand with you: Of Reuven — Elitzur ben Shedeur. These are the “called” of the congregation, [so called because they were called upon for every matter of importance affecting the congregation], the chiefs of the tribes of their fathers. The heads of the thousands of Israel (were) they. And Moses and Aaron took these men that were designated [here to Moses] by name. And they assembled the entire congregation on the first (day) of the second month, and they confirmed their birth (claims) [with deeds and witnesses] after their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, (every male) from twenty years and up, by their heads [see 1]. As the L-rd commanded Moses — and he numbered them in the desert of Sinai. And the children of Reuven, the first-born of Israel, were — their births, by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, by their heads, every male from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Reuven — forty-six thousand and five hundred. Of the children of Gad, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Gad — forty-five thousand and six hundred and fifty. Of the children of Yehudah, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Yehudah — seventy-four thousand and six hundred. Of the children of Yissachar, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Yissachar — fifty-four thousand and four hundred. Of the children of Zevulun, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Zevulun — fifty-seven thousand and four hundred. Of the children of Joseph: Of the children of Ephraim, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Ephraim — forty thousand and five hundred. Of the children of Menasheh, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Menasheh — thirty-two thousand and two hundred. Of the children of Binyamin, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Binyamin — thirty-five thousand and four hundred. Of the children of Dan, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Dan — sixty-two thousand and seven hundred. Of the children of Asher, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Asher — forty-one thousand and five hundred. The children of Naftali, their births by their families by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years and up, all who go to war — Their number of the tribe of Naftali — fifty-three thousand and four hundred. These are the numbered, who were numbered by Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel, twelve men; one man for his fathers’ house were they. And they were — all that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ house, from twenty years and up, all who go to war in Israel — All those numbered were six hundred and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. But the Levites, after the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them. And the L-rd said to Moses, saying: Only the tribe of Levi do not number, and do not take their count in the midst of the children of Israel [The “King’s legion” merits an independent count.] And you, appoint the Levites over the mishkan of the Testimony, and over all of its vessels, and over all that pertains to it. They shall bear the mishkan and all of its vessels, and they shall minister to it, and roundabout the mishkan shall they camp. And when the mishkan travels, the Levites shall dismantle it [and carry it to the place where the cloud (preceding them) comes to rest], and when the mishkan rests, the Levites shall raise it. And the stranger that draws near [to this service of the Levites] shall be put to death [at the hands of Heaven]. And the children of Israel shall encamp, every man in his own camp and every man by his standard, [as per the arrangement of the standards (below), three tribes to each standard], according to their hosts. And the Levites shall encamp around the mishkan of the Testimony and there shall be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel [if you follow these directives; but if not — if strangers appropriate this service, then there will be wrath (as in the instance of Korach, 17:11)], and the Levites shall keep the charge of the mishkan of the Testimony. And the children of Israel did according to all that the L-rd commanded Moses; thus did they do.
